The ka'upu

The ka'upu or black-footed albatross are found on Midway; although, there are fewer of them here than the Moli.

The ka'upu is the first albatross I had seen. During an ornithology field trip a couple years ago, we took a boat ride about 10 miles off the coast of California. There is a good chance the ka'upu we saw gliding effortlessly over the water that day hatched out on midway. It is important to remember that the albatross here on Midway are not simply feeding in the bay and surrounding waters, they make 1,000 mile + flights to forrage in distant seas. They only come on land to breed, and can spend decades roaming the open ocean.
