Many of the long-term human residents of Midway have a special relationship with the sunshine. The rare rain storm can be a downer. This was the most pathetic looking chick I could find outside my house this morning. Contrary to appearances, the Albatross seem to enjoy the rain. This is the only fresh water they will ever come in contact with. They snap at the air in an attempt to drink, and the chorus of tens of thousands of them sounded like machine gun fire last night.
Having lived in the Pacific Northwest for several years, I can relate to this white tern chick who seems to be taking it all in stride.
All the Laysan Ducks on the other hand seem beside themselves with glee.
